RACINE — Regina and Michael Hill saw a desire in the Racine area for a new tanning salon for local patrons.
“People that live around here, they kept asking, ‘Regina, why don’t you open a tanning shop?’” she said.
So they did. Rayz Tanning officially opened last February, and Regina calls the business a success.
The couple also own the plaza where Rayz Tanning is located, as well as Hill’s Gas Station down the road. Regina said that the time between her decision to open the salon and its official opening was only about three to four months. There are seven beds in the facility: beds 1-4 are 20-minute beds that cost $7 a session, five sessions for $30 or 10 sessions for $50; beds 5 and 7 are 12-minute beds costing $9 a session, five sessions for $40 or 10 sessions for $65; and bed six is a 10-minute bed costing $10 a session, four sessions for $45 or 10 sessions for $75.
Regina, who said she’s tanned all her life, helps each customer to decide which bed and tanning lotion they should use to keep them as safe as possible. By law, each person is limited to one session per day, she added.
So far, the busiest season for Regina and her staffters, Georgetta Sayre and Brandi Roush, has been prom season, but she said that business has still been good throughout the year.
“We’ve had a lot of support,” she said.
Along with the beds themselves, each tanning bed room has a radio in them with cords with which they can connect their phones or iPods upon request, chairs and fans. Tanning booth number six also has Bluetooth to connect one’s device to the radio as well, which Regina said is an attempt to create a positive atmosphere for anyone who comes to Rayz.
“My favorite part is the people,” Regina said. “It’s happy, you know; it’s not stressful. People come to relax, so they’re relaxed. It’s a very relaxing place to be.”
Another favorite part of her business, she said, is that she and her employees get to provide services to her fellow Racine residents.
“I’ll be here forever,” she said. “I was born and raised in Racine and I’ll live here forever.”
