Lady Tornadoes rally past Trimble

GLOUSTER, Ohio — Nothing like playing your best when your back’s against the wall.

The Southern volleyball team trailed Tri-Valley Conference Hocking Division host Trimble 2-games-to-1, on Monday night in Athens County, but the Lady Tornadoes rallied back to win the next two games, completing the 3-2 victory and season sweep of THS.

Trimble (7-6, 6-3 TVC Hocking) claimed an early 5-3 lead in the opening game, but Southern (12-2, 8-1) scored the next four points to take the lead. The SHS advantage was short-lived, however, as THS took the lead back at 9-7. The Lady Tomcats led by as much as five (15-10), but the Lady Tornadoes fought back to take the lead at 20-18. However, the Lady Tomcats claimed the next seven points and the opening game by a 25-20 count.

After 20 points were played in the second game, the teams were tied for the sixth time. Southern claimed the next four points and never trailed again, tying the match at one game apiece with a 25-16 win.

SHS and THS fought through four lead changes early in the third and were tied at 18, the ninth time the teams were tied in the game. Southern charged out to a 23-19 lead, but surrendered the next six points, giving Trimble the 25-23 victory and the 2-1 advantage in the match.

The Purple and Gold scored the first 10 points in the fourth and never trailed in the game. The Lady Tornadoes led by as many as 14 points en route to the 25-14 victory, which evened the match at 2-2.

After trailing 1-0, Trimble fought back to take a four-point (10-6) lead in the fifth game. SHS tied the deciding game at 10, but THS claimed the next two points. However, Southern claimed the next five points and capped off the 3-2 match victory with a 15-12 win in the fifth.

Southern’s service attack was led by Kamryn Smith with 23 points and three aces, followed by Marlee Maynard with 10 service points. Marissa Johnson had eight points and three aces in the win, Macie Michael and Talon Drummer each chipped in with seven points, while Sierra Cleland posted five points and Amanda Cole had four points.

At the net, Cleland led Southern with 17 points and eight blocks, followed by Cole with 16 kills and two blocks. Faith Teaford posted nine kills and five blocks for the Purple and Gold, Smith added seven kills and one block, while Johnson finished with two kills and one block. Rounding out the SHS net attack were Maynard with two kills and Michael with one.

Southern also defeated Trimble in five games on September 1, in Racine.

After hosting Miller on Tuesday, Southern returns to action on Thursday, at Miller.
