GALLIPOLIS, Ohio —Truth be told, this wasn’t unexpected.
The Gallia Academy High School soccer squad completed the season sweep of the Ohio Valley Christian School Defenders on Saturday, shutting out the host Defenders 9-0 in the annual Holzer Cup contest.
The Blue Devils scored just twice in the opening half, but then amounted seven second-half goals for the easy 9-0 victory.
With the win, Gallia Academy is now 7-3-0 — with victories in seven of its last eight matches, including a sweep of OVCS.
Two weeks ago, the Blue and White won 8-1 at Gallia Academy High School’s Lester Field.
Its other five victories are all inside the Ohio Valley Conference, which the Blue Devils still lead at 5-0-0.
In the rematch with the Defenders, eight different Devils scored a goal apiece, including a pair from Pedro Carrascal.
Gallia Academy also amassed six assists by five separate players, including a pair by senior striker Isaiah Lester.
This was also the first shutout of the season for GAHS, as the Blue Devils did not allow a single Defender corner kick — or even shot.
The Blue Devils dialed up 30 total shots and a dozen corner kicks, as Carrascal scored six minutes into the match for the only goal GAHS needed.
He also scored with 10 minutes remaining.
The only other first-half goal was by Ben Rutherford with a minute to play, as Miguel Velasco (34 minutes left), Jacob Ratliff (31), Lester (24), Justin Day (15), Carrascal (10), Nathanael Riddle (5) and Pierce Wilcoxen (a minute left) were the second-half scorers.
For Lester, it was his easily team-best 20th goal of the season.
Ratliff, Carrascal, Velasco and Tristan Eggers all had one assist apiece.
The Blue Devils return to the road, and return to now non-league action, tonight at Athens.
Gallia Academy lost against Athens 8-2 at Lester Field in late August.
