COLUMBIA, Ky. — Jorge Guinovart’s goal with 3:00 left to play snapped a second half tie and lifted the University of Rio Grande to a 2-1 win over Lindsey Wilson College, Friday night, in non-conference men’s soccer action at Walter S. Reuling Stadium.

The game, which was billed as the NAIA Network Men’s Soccer Game of the Week, featured a pair of Top 20 squads who were former Mid-South Conference rivals.

Rio Grande, ranked No. 2 in the latest coaches’ poll, improved to 8-1 with the victory.

Lindsey Wilson, which is ranked 19th in the same poll, slipped to 4-3 with the loss.

Guinovart, a junior from Barcelona, Spain, broke a 1-1 deadlock when he found the back of the net off of a pass by senior Lucas Talaveira-Befi (Sao Paulo, Brazil).

The host Blue Raiders got on the board first when Mutaya Mwape scored off an assist by Aleksi Pahkasalo just under two minutes into the second half.

That’s how things stayed until the RedStorm knotted the score on an unassisted goal by senior Pau Rodriguez (Barcelona, Spain) with 28:47 left in the contest. It was a team-leading seventh goal of the year for Rodriguez.

Lindsey Wilson finished with an 18-17 edge in overall shots, although Rio enjoyed a 15-9 advantage in the second half.

The RedStorm also had a 10-4 cushion in shots on frame during the contest, which included 31 common fouls and five yellow card cautions between the two teams.

Sophomore keeper Ben Martinez (Montpellier, France) had three saves in a route-going performance for Rio.

Alvaro Cortazar had a career-high eight saves in a losing cause for Lindsey Wilson.

Rio Grande returns to action on Thursday, Sept. 29, when Brescia University visits Evan E. Davis Field for a River States Conference contest.

Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
