GALLIPOLIS, Ohio —After a hot summer, and if you agree with the league’s media, then this is finally the year that the Meigs High School football team ends its Tri-Valley Conference Ohio Division championship drought.
That’s because, in a poll of seven media members which cover the TVC-Ohio, Meigs has been picked to capture this year’s division football title — as the poll was conducted by the Ohio Valley Publishing sports department.
The Marauders last won the TVC-Ohio in 1996 and 1998 — following the split of the TVC into two divisions beginning with the 1993 campaign.
The Ohio Valley Publishing sports department had three votes in the poll, while two votes belonged to The Athens Messenger — and the other two to The Telegram.
On five ballots, the Marauders were chosen to finish first — part of a total of 46 points.
Meigs was second on one ballot and third on another.
Athens was selected to finish second on five ballots, and third on the other two for 40 points.
Nelsonville-York tallied 34 points with two first-place votes, as the Buckeyes also had a pair of thirds, two fifths and finally a fourth.
Vinton County collected 24 points for fourth-place, finishing second on one ballot, third on another and also a fourth.
Alexander, the defending division champion, totaled 20 points — placing third on one ballot and fourth on another.
Wellston was right behind with 19 total points, notching three fourth-place votes.
River Valley ended up with 13 points, as one pollster predicted the Raiders would finish fourth.
Points were awarded in the poll on a 7-6-5-4-3-2-1 point-basis.
After Athens amassed four consecutive league championships, Alexander amounted its first TVC-Ohio title last season — having moved over from the TVC-Hocking Division in 1997.
The Spartans posted a perfect 6-0 record, followed by Athens, Meigs and River Valley all going 4-2.
Vinton County went 2-4, followed by Wellston at 1-5 and Nelsonville-York at 0-6.
Although, in the past two decades, Nelsonville-York has won outright titles in 1997, 2000, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2008 and 2010 — while sharing with Athens in 2009.
Vinton County claimed its last league title in 1999, while Wellston won its only TVC titles in 2001 and 2002.
Belpre, before leaving the Ohio Division in favor of the Hocking six years ago, won the division in 2007.
Meigs entered the TVC in 1983, while River Valley is beginning its third academic year in the conference.
