PEDRO, Ohio — The Blue Angels had a steep climb against host Rock Hill on Monday.
Unfortunately for the Gallia Academy High School softball squad, it didn’t quite get there.
That’s because the Redwomen blanked the Blue Angels, scoring twice in the third inning and once in the fourth en route to a 3-0 shutout in an Ohio Valley Conference contest.
With the win, Rock Hill — the OVC champion — raised its impressive record to 20 wins against only one loss.
Gallia Academy ends its first season as a member of the OVC.
The Redwomen also completed the season sweep of the Blue Angels, winning 10-3 last month.
In the makeup matchup Monday evening, Rock Hill pitcher Jill Hairston had a two-hit complete-game shutout, walking only one while striking out four.
Gallia Academy’s Hunter Copley pitched well in the loss, scattering six hits with one walk while striking out two.
Both clubs committed only one error, as Kimberly Edelmann and Paxton Roberts recorded singles for the only Blue Angel hits.
The Redwomen broke the scoreless tie with two third-inning runs.
Kaci Russell led off with a double, and went to third on Jenna Lane’s groundout.
Hairston reached on a fielder’s choice, as Russell remained at third base.
On the next at-bat, the Blue Angels retired Russell with a rundown, but Riann Keating conked a two-out two-run double.
In the fourth, the Redwomen added an insurance point when Anna Darby singled and Kelsey Olderham reached on a fielder’s choice.
Russell was hit by a pitch, setting up Lane singling in Olderham.
Russell and Lane led Rock Hill with two hits apiece.
The Blue Angels return home, and play for a Division III sectional championship, on Friday the 13th against Southeastern.
Gallia Academy is the fourth-seeded squad in the sectional, while Southeastern is the fifth seed.
First pitch from GAHS is set for 5 p.m.
