ALBANY, Ohio — For the second time in less than a week, the River Valley Raiders put a spoiler alert on the Tri-Valley Conference Ohio Division baseball championship race.
For the second time, though, the Raiders came up just short on the road.
That’s because, on Tuesday in a TVC-Ohio makeup matchup, the Raiders fell 4-1 at Alexander.
As a result of Alexander’s win, along with Athens mercy-ruling Wellston, the Meigs Marauders joined Alexander and Wellston as this year’s division tri-champions.
All three teams finished at 9-3 in the league, as Meigs, Alexander and Athens shared last year’s title at 10-2.
The Spartans, which scored one run in the second inning and its final three against River Valley in the third, improved to 17-7.
The Raiders, meanwhile, fell to 9-13 — and wrapped up their second spring in the TVC-Ohio at 3-9.
On Friday evening, River Valley led Wellston 6-0, before the Golden Rockets roared back to win 11-9.
The Raiders’ upset bid against Alexander was held to just four hits, although — after scoring in the fourth on a Bailey Rhodes RBI that plated Tim Kemper — they did have the tying run at the plate in the seventh.
But Shea Grigsby, the third Alexander pitcher and who relieved Wesley Shellman, induced a game-ending pop-out to second baseman Mason Chapman.
Grigsby gained the save, as Shellman pitched two and two-thirds while only allowing one hit.
Lukas Thompson pitched the first four frames for the Spartans, giving up a run on one hit and four walks with five strikeouts.
Dillon Ragan pitched the distance for the Raiders, as all four Alexander runs were earned on 10 hits and three walks.
He also struck out three.
The Spartans scored in the second when Aric Russell’s single scored Turner Andrews.
In the next frame, Russell rapped a two-run single for a 3-0 lead, crossing Thompson and Cory Chapman.
Grigsby then singled to score Andrews to make it 4-0.
Russell finished 3-for-3 for Alexander, as Andrews, Thompson, Shellman and Mason Chapman collected one hit apiece.
Kyle Howard had two hits for the Red and Black.
The Raiders return home, and return to non-league action, today against South Gallia.
