Blue Devils down Athens in tennis

CENTENARY, Ohio — The Gallia Academy High School tennis team, with a brand new week, got itself back on the winning track.

That’s because the Blue Devils defeated visiting Athens 4-1 in a Southeastern Ohio Athletic League match on Monday, snapping a two-match losing streak in the process.

Gallia Academy is now 4-2 on the season, and 2-1 in the SEOAL.

Last Thursday, the Blue Devils — the three-time defending SEOAL champion — had its 28-match league win steak snapped by the Jackson Ironmen, as Jackson defeated Gallia Academy 4-1 at Jackson’s YMCA Courts.

Jackson is 3-0 in the league, as Gallia Academy (April 4) and Jackson (April 11) both had league matches against Athens postponed in the past three weeks.

Athens is 1-1 in the SEOAL, thanks to its 3-2 triumph over Logan last Thursday.

The Bulldogs’ makeup matchups against Jackson (April 26) and Gallia Academy (April 27) are set for the end of this month, as Logan has played all four of its matches — and is 0-4.

Jackson defeated Logan 3-2 in Monday’s other SEOAL bout.

Against Athens, the Blue Devils swept in straight sets for three victories, while also gaining a forfeit win at third singles.

The Bulldogs, in fact, were without three players due to the flu.

At first singles, sophomore Pierce Wilcoxon of Gallia Academy defeated Freddie Hasselt 6-1, 6-0.

The Blue Devils also swept the two doubles tilts, and limited Athens to only three total points.

Adriana Wilcoxon and Dekota Metzler, both seniors, swept Davis and Ishan Marta at first doubles 6-1, 6-0.

Olivia Meadows and Katie Carpenter captured a 6-2, 6-0 sweep of McDormind and Anmar Fauzi at second doubles.

Athens’ only win was at second singles — a 6-4, 6-4 sweep by Dustin Goetz over Gallia Academy’s Miles Cornwell.

The Blue Devils returned to non-league action on Tuesday at Chillicothe, while Wheelersburg awaits their visit today.

Wheelersburg won at Gallia Academy 3-2 a week ago today — for the Blue and White’s only non-league loss.
