MERCERVILLE, Ohio — Maybe four quarters are just too many.

With eight minutes remaining in Saturday’s non-conference tilt between Symmes Valley and South Gallia, the host Lady Rebels held a four-point lead. However, the final buzzer sounded it was the Lady Vikings that claimed a 61-39 victory.

South Gallia (0-6) led 16-to-11 after the opening stanza, but the Lady Vikings (5-2) cut the lead to 29-27 at halftime. SGHS added two points to its advantage in a slow-paced, 6-to-4 third quarter. Symmes Valley outscored the Red and Gold 30-to-4 in the fourth quarter, taking the win by a 61-39 final.

Mikayla Poling paced the Lady Rebels with 15 points, followed by Aaliyah Howell with 10 and Erin Evans with eight. Ashley Northup posted six points to round out the round out the Lady Rebel scoring. SGHS, which connected on six three pointers in the setback, shot just 5-of-16 (31.3 percent) from the free throw line.

Jensyn Shepherd and Kaitlyn Payne led the Lady Vikings with 13 points apiece, followed by Breanna Brumfield and Meranda Hayes with 10 each. Sierra Ross and Payton Walsh each had five points, Cailtyn Crabtree added three, while Kendra Kazee rounded out the SVHS scoring with two points. Symmes Valley was 10-of-17 (58.8 percent) from the charity stripe in the win.

The Lady Rebels will look to avenge this loss on January 30, when they invade Willow Wood. South Gallia, which hosted Federal Hocking on Monday, returns to action on Thursday at Wahama.
