Defenders charge past Calvary, 54-35

HURRICANE, W.Va. — Still perfect.

The Ohio Valley Christian boys basketball team improved to 5-0 in road contests this season following a 54-35 victory over host Calvary Baptist Academy Friday night in a non-conference matchup in Putnam County.

The Defenders (6-0) shot 52 percent from the field and never trailed in the contest, as the guests broke away from an early 2-all tie with an 8-0 run to secure a 10-2 edge after eight minutes of play.

The Patriots countered with an 8-5 run to start the second period, allowing the hosts to close to within 15-10, but OVCS answered with five consecutive points to take their largest lead of the first half at 20-10.

CBA again closed the gap down to five points with a 9-4 spurt, but the Defenders added a basket before halftime to claim a 26-19 cushion at the break.

OVCS made a 10-2 run to start the second half for a 36-21 advantage, and the hosts never came closer than 11 points the rest of the way. CBA ended the third quarter with a small 7-6 run and trailed 42-28 headed into the finale.

The Defenders ended regulation with a 12-7 run and took their largest lead of the night with the final 19-point margin of victory.

Ohio Valley Christian netted 22-of-42 field goal attempts overall, including a 7-of-15 effort from 3-point range for 47 percent. The guests committed five turnovers and were also 3-of-5 at the free throw line for 60 percent.

Senior Marshall Hood led OVCS with 19 points and 11 rebounds, followed by Austin Ragan with 16 points and Elijah McDonald with 13 points. Justin Beaver and Andrew Sims rounded out the winning tally with four points and two points respectively.

Beaver and McDonald each hauled in five caroms apiece, while Dillon Ragan dished out a team-high nine assists. OVCS claimed a slim 28-27 overall edge on the boards.
