KOKOMO, Ind. — Indiana University Kokomo put down a spirited effort by the University of Rio Grande in the opening set before rolling the RedStorm in each of the final two stanzas of their River States Conference Championship quarterfinal round matchup, Friday morning, at Cougar Gymnasium.
The Cougars upped its overall record to 32-4 with a 25-18, 25-13, 25-9 win and advanced to meet the Point Park-Indiana University Southeast winner in Saturday’s semifinal round.
Rio Grande, the tourney’s No. 4 seed out of the East Division, finished 9-23 with the loss.
The RedStorm led 8-7 in the opening set before IUK – the tourney’s top seed out of the West Division and the league’s regular season champion, pulled away down the stretch.
The Cougars bolted to big leads in each of the final two sets and were never seriously challenged.
Rio Grande, which had a .150 attack percentage in the opening stanza, finished with more attack errors than kills in each of the final two sets.
Freshman Jess Youse (Pettisville, OH) led the RedStorm with six kills, while sophomore Macy Roell (Farmersville, OH) had eight assists and junior Katie Hemsley (Jackson, OH) added nine digs.
Sophomore Carly Shriver (Gallipolis, OH) had both of the RedStorm’s service aces in the match.
Indiana Kokomo had 39 kills and just 10 errors in its 77 swings for a .377 attack percentage. Six of the 10 errors came in the opening set.
Nyssa Baker had a match-best 12 kills and five block assists for the Cougars, while Kendal Williams and Sarah Morin finished with 22 and 13 assists, respectively.
Macee Rudy added 10 digs in the win for IUK.
