RIO GRANDE, Ohio — Sarah Bonar tossed in 16 points to lead a quartet of double-digit scorers for the University of Rio Grande as the RedStorm overcame a slow start for a 75-58 win over Wilberforce University in the championship game of the 33rd Annual Bevo Francis Tournament, Saturday afternoon, at the Newt Oliver Arena.

Rio Grande, which posted its second win over the Bulldogs in a span of 11 days, improved to 4-1 with the victory.

Wilberforce fell to 2-5 with the loss.

Rio Grande shot just 25 percent from the field in the opening half and led just 28-22 at the intermission, but connected on 18 of their 35 field goal attempts in the second half (51.4%) and methodically pulled away for the win.

In fact, the RedStorm built a 25-point lead, 70-45, following a conventional three-point play by freshman Megan Liedtke (Beverly, OH) with 4:08 remaining – their largest lead of the day.

Wilberforce, which also shot 25 percent in the opening half, never lead and got no closer than five points early in the second half.

Bonar, a senior from Hartford, Ohio, scored eight points in each half en route to her team-leading tally.

Junior Sharday Baines (East Cleveland, OH) had a season-high 14 points in the win, while Liedtke finished with 11 and freshman Jasmine Smith (Canal Winchester, OH) tossed in 10 points. Baines also had a team-high four assists.

Junior Brooke Marcum (Vinton, OH) and freshman Jaida Carter (New Philadelphia, OH) both narrowly missed double-double efforts for Rio. Marcum had nine points and seven rebounds, while Carter had eight points and a team-high nine rebounds.

Brooklynn Peterson scored a game-high 21 points in the loss for Wilberforce, while Kendra Moss finished with 13 points and a game-high 10 rebounds – all on the offensive end.

Brieanna Carter added 11 points and nine rebounds for the Bulldogs.

Rio Grande will return to action on Saturday, Nov. 28, at Kentucky Wesleyan.
