Rio men win Classic CC crown

RIO GRANDE, Ohio — The University of Rio Grande men’s cross country team ran to a first-place finish in Friday’s 1st Annual RedStorm Classic at the Rio Grande Cross Country Course.

The RedStorm had four of the top five individual finishers and 17 points as a team to outdistance the University of Pikeville (51 pts.) and Alice Lloyd College (63 pts.) for the title.

Runners from fellow Kentucky Intercollegiate Athletic Conference member Brescia University, as well as NCAA Division I programs Ohio University and Kent State University competed in the event.

Ohio University sophomore Kody Wolfe, who ran unattached, won the 8k race in a time of 26:50, crossing the finish line in front of a quartet of RedStorm runners.

Junior Blake Freed (Uhrichsville, OH), the RedStorm’s top finisher in two of their three previous outings, made it three-out-of-four by finishing second in a time of 26:58.

Fellow junior Dallas Guy (Buffalo, OH), freshman Mike Norris (Dayton, OH) and senior Matt Engstrom (Dover, OH) rounded out the top five by crossing in times of 27:22, 27:30 and 27:58, respectively.

Also competing for Rio in the event were freshman Phil Colbert, who was 14th with a time of 31:35; freshman Brody Ferris (New Philadelphia, OH), who placed 17th in 33;24; and sophomore D.J. Hickman (Clayton, OH), who was 24th in a time of 36:58.

Rio Grande will returns to action on Sat., Nov. 7, when it hosts the KIAC Championships. Race time is set for 11 a.m.
