RIO GRANDE, Ohio — Sophomore Keri Lawrence captured an individual championship and led the University of Rio Grande women’s cross country team to a first-place finish in Friday’s RedStorm Classic at the Rio Grande Cross Country course.

The RedStorm had 15 points as a team in the first annual event, which attracted runners from four other schools, including NCAA Division I Kent State University.

The University of Pikeville was the only school among the remaining four participants with enough runners to produce a team score, finishing with 47 points.

Lawrence, a native of Reedsville, Ohio, completed the 5K course in 20:24 for the top finish among the 19 competitors.

Kent State junior Robin Foster, who along with teammate Morgan Manuel ran unattached, finished second with a time of 20:33, crossing the line just ahead of Rio Grande freshman Maggie Dellinger (Washington Court House, OH).

Rio sophomore Rachel Ball (Chillicothe, OH) was fourth in a time of 20:53 and Manuel completed the top five with a finish of 21:05.

Freshman Lucy Williams (Athens, OH), Rio’s top finisher in each of its previous meets, did not run.

Among the others who did represent the RedStorm in the event were junior Alex Ellis (Ona, WV), who was sixth in a time of 21:38; sophomore Aubrey Dunfee (Baltimore, OH), who finished seventh in a time of 22:02; junior Katie Glover (Ashville, OH), who crossed in 10th place with a mark of 22:21; freshman Jennifer Case (McArthur, OH), who was 13th in her collegiate debut with a time of 23:51; and junior Marissa McConoha (Duncan Falls, OH), who placed 18th with a time of 28:26.

Runners from fellow Kentucky Intercollegiate Athletic Conference schools Brescia and Alice Lloyd also competed.

Rio Grande returns to action on Sat., Nov. 7, when it hosts the KIAC Championships. Race time is set for 10:15 a.m.
