WILMORE, Ky. — The University of Rio Grande scored just over two minutes into each half and added an insurance marker midway through the second stanza en route to a 3-1 win over Asbury University, Saturday night, in Kentucky Intercollegiate Athletic Conference men’s soccer action at the Asbury Soccer Complex.

The RedStorm, ranked No. 1 in the latest NAIA coaches poll, improved to 14-1 overall and 4-0 in league play.

Asbury slipped to 4-8 overall and 2-2 in the KIAC with the loss.

All three Rio Grande goals came from natives of Sao Paulo, Brazil – senior Luiz Filho and juniors Heitor de Melo and Willian Paulino. Ironically, sophomore Joao Paulo Antonio – also from Sao Paulo, Brazil – had a pair of assists.

Filho got the scoring underway just 2:12 into the match when he blistered a shot which deflected off the hands of Asbury net-minder John Burns and into the net, giving the RedStorm the 1-0 lead they enjoyed at the half.

The lead grew to 2-0 at the 47:39 mark when de Melo headed a crossing pass from Antonio into the top left corner of the net.

Paulino sealed the win with his team-leading 13th goal of the season off a feed from Antonio with 28:02 remaining in the contest.

Asbury avoided a shutout with 1:16 left to play when Ryan Metcalf scored on the rebound of a shot by teammate Jarod Rocco, which got off the hands of Rio freshman goal keeper Ben Martinez (Montpellier, France).

Rio Grande finished with a 26-9 advantage in shots, including a 20-5 edge in the second half. The RedStorm also had 15 corner kick opportunities to just one for the Eagles.

Martinez had four saves in the winning effort for the RedStorm.

Burns stopped six shots in the loss for Asbury.

Rio Grande returns to action on Wednesday night when No. 25 West Virginia University-Tech visits Evan E. Davis Field for a match that will decide the league’s regular season title.

Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
