RIO GRANDE, Ohio — All it took was a five-minute scoring flurry to hand the University of Rio Grande its first loss in league play as a member of the Kentucky Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.

Three different Point Park players found the back of the net over a span of 5:00 in the second half to give the Pioneers a 3-0 win over the RedStorm, Saturday evening, at chilly Evan E. Davis Field.

Point Park improved to 7-4-2 overall and 4-0 in the KIAC, taking over sole possession of first place in the league standings with the victory.

Rio Grande slipped to 4-8 overall and 3-1 in conference play with the loss – the RedStorm’s first in 12 games since becoming a member of the KIAC prior to the 2014 campaign.

The contest was a scoreless affair throughout an evenly-played opening half. Point Park outshot the RedStorm, 7-6, including 4-3 on frame, in first stanza.

Neither team scored in the first 26-plus minutes of the second half until the Pioneers staggered their hosts with a trio of markers, seemingly in the blink of an eye.

Beth Millican snapped the tie at 71:48, while Leeza Tokarski and Anna Wyss added goals at 74:01 and 76:48, respectively. All three goals were unassisted.

Rio Grande had no answer the rest of the way and, in fact, was outshot 8-0 in the second period. It was the RedStorm’s fourth shutout loss of the season.

Erica Roney had four saves in earning her fifth clean sheet of the year in goal for Point Park.

Sophomore Kristin Garn (Morrow, OH) had five saves in a losing cause for Rio.

Rio Grande returns to action on Thursday when Asbury University visits for a KIAC contest. Kickoff is set for 5 p.m.
