POINT PLEASANT, W.Va. — The Lady Knights went out fighting.
The St. Albans girls soccer team defeated host Point Pleasant 3-1 in a Region 3 Section 1 tournament match-up on Monday night in Mason County.
The Lady Knights (4-15-1) took it to the visiting Lady Red Dragons in the first half, but St. Albans gathered itself and took control in the second half.
The Lady Knights started out the gate with some offensive pressure on St. Albans goalie Megan Russell. Point junior Emma Rice netted a goal in the 10th minute of the contest with an assist from senior Carlee Dabney.
The Lady Red Dragons shifted the momentum after Kelsey Thompson scored an unassisted goal in the 32nd minute. The match was tied 1-all heading into halftime.
The Lady Red Dragons came out on fire in the second half and tested the Point Pleasant defense. Rachel Beck’s unassisted goal gave St. Albans the lead in the 13th minute.
As the the second period progressed, the Lady Knights were worn down thanks to pressure from St. Albans and the colder temperatures. Alli Johnson sealed the victory for St. Albans with a goal in the 28th minute of the second half. The Lady Red Dragons had six shots on goal alone in the second half.
“It was a good game. The girls definitely saved one of their best games for last,” Point Pleasant coach Chris Errett said. “They gave everything they had and it just wasn’t enough. I’m really proud of them. It was a good season and they put a lot of work in and it really showed throughout the season.”
St. Albans led with 11 shots — including 11 shots on goal — while Point Pleasant had seven shots — including three shots on goal. The Lady Red Dragons also had a team-high 10 corner kicks. Alexis Meadows had eight saves for Point Pleasant and Russell had two saves for St. Albans.
This was the last game for Point Pleasant seniors Meadows, Dabney, Brandi Stroup and Torrie Epling.
