The Meigs volleyball team dropped three straight games to Tri-Valley Conference Ohio Division host Athens on Thursday at McAfee Gymnasium, but the Lady Marauders got closer to the league champions throughout the night.
Meigs (5-17, 4-8 TVC Ohio) managed just one service point in the opening game, as the Lady Bulldogs cruised to a 25-8 victory.
Athens, which has now won three consecutive conference titles, never trailed in the second game and rolled to a 25-12 win.
After battling through eight ties and four lead changes early in the third game, the Lady Bulldogs took a three-point advantage at 13-10. The Lady Marauders battled back to take a lead at 17-15, but AHS regained the advantage at 19-18. The Lady Bulldogs outscored Meigs 6-2 over the remainder of the third, sealing the game by a 25-20 final.
The Lady Marauders service attack was led by junior Morgan Lodwick with eight points, including three aces. Alliyah Pullins and Devyn Oliver both marked two points, while Devin Humphreys added one point. Pullins finished with two aces, while Oliver and Humphreys each had one.
Pullins led MHS at the net with seven kills, followed by Humphreys with three, Kassidy Betzing with two and Lodwick with one. Betzing led the net defense with two blocks, while Lodwick, Oliver and Allie Hanstine each had one block. Oliver marked a team-best 10 assists, while Betzing and Jordan Roush led the Meigs defense with two digs each.
Athens has now won 34 straight TVC Ohio matches, including a 3-0 victory at Meigs on September 22.
The Lady Marauders, who finished the regular season with back-to-back losses, return to action in the sectional quarterfinal on Monday, when Vinton County visits Larry R. Morrison Gymnasium.
