RIO GRANDE, Ohio — Payten Davis scored her team-leading fifth goal of the year with 5:19 left in regulation, lifting the University of Rio Grande to a 2-1 win over Union (Ky.) College, Wednesday night, in non-conference women’s soccer action at Evan E. Davis Field.
The RedStorm, who won for a sixth consecutive outing, improved its overall mark to 7-5 with the victory.
Union suffered a 10th straight loss and fell to 0-13-1 on the season.
Davis, a freshman from Chillicothe, took a pass from fellow frosh Morgan Willoughby (Wheelersburg, OH) and beat Union goal keeper Madison Meyer from the right side of the 18-yard box for what proved to be the winning marker.
The Bulldogs actually drew first blood in the back-and-forth affair when Carla Delgado collected a pass from teammate Aubree Hayes off the left wing and scored from the top of the 18 to give the visitors a 1-0 lead.
Delgado’s goal snapped a scoreless streak for Union – which had been blanked in each of its last four outings – that covered 474:46 over portions of six contests.
Rio scored the equalizer with 10:45 left before intermission on a scramble inside the 18 following a free kick, as freshman Chase Davis (Huntington, WV) dropped off a chip pass that junior Kelsey Lee (West Chester, OH) booted into the net for a 1-1 tie.
That’s how things stayed until Davis’ late go-ahead score and the Bulldogs managed just one shot the rest of the way, which wasn’t on goal.
Both teams finished with 16 shots overall, while Rio Grande had an 8-6 advantage in shots on frame.
Junior Andrea Vera (Quito, Ecuador) stopped five shots in the RedStorm’s winning effort.
Meyer was credited with five of UC’s six saves in a losing cause.
Rio Grande returns to action on Saturday when West Virginia University-Tech visits for a 5 p.m. kickoff. The RedStorm and the Golden Bears are currently tied atop the RSC standings at 4-0 in league play.
