RACINE, Ohio — The Lady Tornadoes simply gave away too many points.
The Southern volleyball team committed a total of 36 errors and dropped a 3-0 decision to Tri-Valley Conference Hocking Division guest Miller on Thursday night in Meigs County, falling by a combined 13 points over three games.
Southern (3-8, 2-3 TVC Hocking) led by as many as five points early in the opening game, but Miller (5-3, 3-2) took the lead 15-14 and never trailed again on its way to a 25-21 victory.
After a trio of lead changes in the second game, the teams were tied at 21, the eighth and final time they were tied. The Lady Falcons claimed four of the next five points, moving ahead 2-0 in the match with a 25-22 win.
The Lady Tornadoes scored the first six points of the third game, but Miller answered with a 6-0 run to tie the game. The Lady Falcons tied the game five more times before finally taking the lead at 18-17. From there, Southern scored just two more points and fell by a 25-19 count, giving MHS the 3-0 sweep.
Southern’s service attack was led by Jaiden Roberts with match-highs of 17 service points and five aces. Baylee Grueser earned seven points in the setback, while Julia Montgomery, Marissa Brooker and Jane Roush each had two points, with one ace by Montgomery. SHS senior Sydney Cleland had one service point to round out the category for the hosts.
Baylee Wolfe led the Purple and Gold at the net with eight kills and three blocks. Jolisha Ervin had four kills for SHS, Phoenix Cleland added two kills, while Kassie Barton had one kill and one block. Roush and Paige VanMeter posted one kill each, while Brooker had a team-high 13 assists.
The Lady Falcons were led by Josie Perani with 10 service points and three aces. Olivia Houk, Ryleigh Newman, Josie Crabtree and Haille Joseph each had seven points, with three aces by Houk and two aces apiece by Newman, Crabtree and Joseph.
Houk had a team-highs of 10 kills and five blocks. Crabtree finished with nine kills and one block for the guests, Newman chipped in with eight kills, while Perani had a match-high 24 assist in the win.
Southern and Miller will meet again Oct. 5 in Hemlock. The Lady Tornadoes return to action on Monday at Wahama, where SHS will try to end its six-match skid.
