MOUNT VERNON, Ohio — Rachel Baker and Lydia Simpson had two goals and one assist each, while Regina Rudder added three assists to lead 25th-ranked Mount Vernon Nazarene University past the University of Rio Grande, 6-0, Wednesday afternoon, in non-conference women’s soccer action at Cougar Field.
The Cougars, whose only loss to Rio in the all-time series was retroactive forfeit loss which negated a victory two seasons ago, improved to 5-2 with the win.
The RedStorm, who suffered their second consecutive loss, slipped to 2-3.
MVNU, which enjoyed an overwhelming 32-9 edge in shots, blew things wide open by scoring five times in the second half.
Baker had the assist on Emily Heaton’s goal just over six minutes into the match – a goal which produced the Cougars’ slim advantage at the intermission.
Baker then scored the first of her two goals just under eight minutes into the second half to make it 2-0. The marker was the first of three straight which came off of passes by Rudder.
Simpson found the net at 59:53 and added another goal just 27 seconds later to push the lead to 4-0, before Baker tallied her final goal of the day at the 70:00 mark via an assist by Morgan Gibson.
Jacqueline Fouts set the final score, scoring off the rebound of a miss by Simpson with 15:22 left in the contest.
Sophomore Kristin Garn (Morrow, OH) had a career-high eight saves in goal for Rio Grande, which played without four injured starters.
Ashley Flautt had four saves for the Cougars.
Rio Grande returns to action on Saturday, Sept. 26, at the University of the Cumberlands.
