RIO GRANDE, Ohio — Milligan College’s Bekah Cundiff scored an unassisted goal midway through the opening half and the Buffaloes made it stand up, handing the University of Rio Grande a 1-0 loss, Saturday afternoon, in non-conference women’s soccer action at Evan E. Davis Field.
The RedStorm suffered a second straight loss and fell to 1-3 on the season.
Milligan picked up its third consecutive victory and improved to 3-1.
Cundiff scored just over 22 minutes into the first period when she worked her way behind the RedStorm’s defensive back line and beat Rio junior keeper Kelsey Lee (West Chester, OH) in a one-on-one showdown for what proved to be the game’s lone goal.
Lee was making her first start in goal for Rio while regular net-minder Andrea Vera (Quito, Ecuador) was serving a one-game suspension after receiving a red card in Thursday’s loss at Mount Vernon Nazarene.
The RedStorm controlled the action for most of the day on Saturday, outshooting Milligan, 12-6, overall and, 5-3, in shots on frame. Rio also enjoyed a 4-2 edge in corner kick opportunities.
Freshman goalie Eva Bower recorded five saves en route to her second straight clean sheet.
Lee had two stops in the loss for Rio.
Rio Grande returns to action on Wednesday when it travels to Georgetown (Ky.) College for a meeting with its former Mid-South Conference rival.
Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. at Toyota Stadium.
