POMEROY, Ohio — By the narrowest of margins.
In the second Tri-Valley Conference Hocking Division golf match of the season, on Tuesday afternoon at the Meigs County Golf Course, host Eastern and reigning league champion Waterford were tied at 174 and forced to go to a tie-breaking fifth score, per OHSAA rule.
In the tie-breaker, the Eagles earned the victory over the Wildcats by just one stroke, 49-to-50, with both schools picking up wins over Miller (199), Belpre (225) and Trimble (241) in the process.
EHS senior Kaleb Honaker led the way for the victors, with a seven-over-par round of 41. Next for the hosts was Jasiah Brewer with a 42, followed by John Harris with a 43. Eastern’s fourth score came from Nick Durst, who posted a 48.
Ryan Harbour fired a 49 for Eastern’s tie-breaking score, while Garrett Chalfont carded a 52.
Waterford was led by match medalist Wesley Jenkins, who shot a five-over-par 39. Next was Travis Pottmeyer with a 41, followed by Evan Seevers with a 45 and Grant Weihl with a 49. The Wildcats’ tie-breaking score was a 50 shot by Brooks Suprono, while Matt Semon recorded a 53.
Hunter Dutiel led Miller with an eight-over-par 42, while Blaine Needham and Trey Hettich recorded matching 51s. The Falcons’ final score was a 55 recorded by Collin Pargeon. Not counting toward the MHS total, Brody Dutiel carded a 63 and Logan Dishon fired a 67.
The Golden Eagles — who had just four golfers — were led by Maddie Roby with a 46. Jeremiah Stitt and Brady Shriver had matching rounds of 56, while Dalton Kimble fired a 67 for Belpre.
Trimble also had just four golfers and was led by Nathan Riley with a 52. Aeden Bailes shot 59 for the Tomcats, while Josh Hashman and Zach Bragg each carded 65.
Eastern — which handed Waterford its lone league loss a year ago — will visit the Wildcats on Tuesday, at Lakeside Golf Course.
