CENTENARY, Ohio — Talk about a stingy defense.
The Gallia Academy baseball team allowed visiting Point Pleasant to reach base just four times, with the Big Blacks never advancing past second base, as the Blue Devils claimed a 6-0 victory on Thursday evening in Gallia County.
The Big Blacks (6-22) posted back-to-back singles with one out in the first inning, but didn’t reach base again until the sixth frame.
Gallia Academy (14-8) — which left a runner in scoring position in each of the first two frames —broke through in the bottom of the third, as Garrett McGuire singled home Gabe Peck and John Stout. McGuire then scored on a single by Jeremy Brumfield to give the hosts a 3-0 advantage.
The Blue Devils added on in the bottom of the fifth frame, as Brumfield doubled home McGuire and then courtesy runner Matthew Moreaux scored on a Quinton Yarger double.
GAHS marked the final run of its 6-0 victory in the bottom of the sixth, when Peck scored on a Cole Davis groundout.
Brumfield was the winning pitcher of record for Gallia Academy, striking out three batters and allowing two hits in 6.2 innings. Bailey Walker pitched the final .1 innings for the hosts, allowing one hit.
Carter Smith struck out five and suffered the loss in five innings on the mound for Point Pleasant, surrendering five earned runs on eight hits and a walk. Derek Blazer pitched the final frame for PPHS, allowing one earned run and two walks.
Brumfield helped his own cause, going 2-for-3 with a double and two runs batted in. John Stout was 2-for-3 with a run scored for the Blue and White, Yarger doubled once and drove in one run, while McGuire contributed a single, two runs scored and two RBIs.
