NELSONVILLE, Ohio — Call them selfish if you want, but the Lady Marauders aren’t sharing with anyone.
One night after clinching a share of its first Tri-Valley Conference Ohio Division championship since 2011, the Meigs softball team earned the title outright, defeating host Nelsonville-York by a 12-1 margin in six innings, on Wednesday night in Athens County.
The Lady Marauders (16-3, 11-0 TVC Ohio) went ahead 1-0 in the top of the first, as Taylor Swartz doubled and then scored on a two-out error.
Nelsonville-York (4-18, 0-11) tied the game with two outs in the bottom of the opening inning, when Bullock tripled and then scored on a single by Frazier.
After a scoreless second frame for both sides, Meigs added three runs in the third inning. First, Danielle Morris scored the game-winning run on an error, and then Breanna Zirkle singled home both Peyton Rowe and Bre Colburn to give the Lady Marauders a 4-1 lead.
The Lady Buckeyes left a runner on third base in the bottom of the third inning and didn’t reach base again in the game.
Meigs pushed its lead to 9-1 with five runs in the top of the fifth inning, which was highlighted by a Devyn Oliver three-run double. The Lady Marauders sealed the 12-1 victory with three runs in the top of the sixth inning.
Zirkle earned the pitching victory in two innings of relief for Meigs, striking out three and allowing one hit. MHS starting pitcher Alliyah Pullins struck out three batters in two innings and allowed one earned run, on two hits. Maddison Woodyard finished the game with two perfect innings of relief for the Maroon and Gold.
Jones suffered the pitching loss for NYHS, striking out one in six innings and allowing 12 runs, three earned, on 10 hits and two walks.
Oliver led the MHS offense, going 2-for-4 with a triple, a double, one run scored and four runs batted in. Zirkle went 2-for-3 with a run scored and two RBIs for the Maroon and Gold, Morgan Lodwick was 2-for-4 with a double and a run scored, while Colburn went 2-for-4 and scored a game-high three runs.
Swartz doubled once and scored once for MHS, Morris singled once and scored once, while Rowe and Shalynn Mitchell both scored twice. Pullins, Ciera Older and Rachel Kesterson each drove one run in the for the victors.
Bullock and Shockley both tripled once for NYHS, while Frazier added a single.
Nelsonville-York committed all seven of the game’s errors. The Lady Buckeyes stranded two runners on base, while Meigs left eight.
MHS also defeated the Orange and Brown on Tuesday, by a 15-0 count in Rocksprings.
This is Meigs’ 15th conference softball championship, with its last coming in 2011. The Lady Marauders will look to complete its perfect league campaign when they visit River Valley on a date to be determined.
