MILLIGAN COLLEGE, Tenn. – Courtney Young’s goal with 2:43 left to play snapped a 1-1 tie and lifted the University of Rio Grande to a 2-1 win over Milligan College, Saturday afternoon, in women’s college soccer action at Anglin Field.
Rio Grande evened its record at 1-1 with the victory, while the host Buffaloes dropped their season opener.
Young, a senior from Okena, Ohio, scored the game-winner off a through ball from senior Melissa Dickerson (Little Hocking, OH), firing the shot past Milligan goal keeper Charlotte Stephens.
Dickerson scored the game’s opening goal from 20 yards out in the top corner – off an assist by senior Rachel Hoffman (Franklin, OH) – to give the RedStorm a 1-0 lead just under 12 minutes into the contest.
Milligan scored the tying marker with 2:51 left before the intermission when Madison Thomas found the net off of a feed from Caroline Gill and that’s how things stayed until Young’s eventual game-winner.
“We got off to a good start, but then we took our foot off the accelerator,” said Rio Grande head coach Callum Morris. “Both teams had some chances in the second half, but we were finally able to get the score from Courtney there at the end. We showed a lot of composure, a lot of fight – much more than the opening game on Wednesday (a 3-1 loss at home to Marian University). Hopefully, we can build on this and move forward.”
Rio sophomore goal keeper Kristin Garn (Morrow, OH) stopped nine shots for her first collegiate victory.
Stephens had four saves in the loss for Milligan, which outshot the RedStorm, 16-12.
Rio Grande returns to action on Monday afternoon when it opens Kentucky Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action against West Virginia University-Tech.
Kickoff is set for 3 p.m. at Milligan College’s Anglin Field. There will be no live video or statistics of the game.
