WELLSTON, Ohio — In more ways than one on Tuesday, the Raiders got rained upon.
First, Tuesday was just generally a rainy day throughout the Ohio Valley.
On Tuesday night, however, in its Tri-Valley Conference Ohio Division boys basketball bout at Wellston, River Valley got rained on by the Golden Rocket three-ball.
In allowing eight three-pointers while making only one, the Raiders fell to Wellston 61-41 — as the Silver and Black suffered its fourth consecutive loss.
The Raiders are also 0-2 in the TVC-Ohio, while Wellston improved to 2-3 — and 1-1 in the division.
The second quarter was the difference against the Golden Rockets.
After leading 12-11 following the first frame, the Raiders were tripled 18-6 in the second stanza — before being outscored 32-23 in the second half.
Wellston, with four players in double figures, relied on eight three-pointers —three apiece by Hunter Whalen and Decota McKenzie and two from Michael Graham.
The Golden Rockets also sank 9-of-14 free throws, as the Raiders only attempted seven.
Whalen and Matt Simpson scored a dozen points apiece to pace the Rockets, as Simpson made five field goals and Whalen wound up with four.
McKenzie and Noah Henry hit for four field goals and 11 points apiece, as Henry led the way at the line by making 3-of-4.
Simpson was 2-of-4 from the stripe, while Eddie Smith — on three field goals and 2-of-2 foul shots — added eight.
Whalen and Daivon Newell netted a free throw apiece.
The Raiders’ frontcourt force of Ian Polcyn and Jacob Dovenbarger led them, as both scored a half-dozen field goals for 12 points apiece.
In the opening canto, Dovenbarger dropped in four field goals and Polcyn another two.
In the second stanza, however, the Raiders only managed another Polcyn basket — along with a free throw and the team’s only three by Dustin Barber.
Barber finished with seven points on two field goals and 2-of-4 free throws — while Brandon Call with two buckets, Jarrett McCarley with two foul shots, and Tre Craycraft and Patrick Brown with a field goal apiece rounded out River Valley.
The Raiders return home, and return to TVC-Ohio Division action, on Friday night when they host Meigs.
