Ironmen roll Raiders

By Paul Boggs -

BIDWELL, Ohio — A fast start, and an equally strong finish, spearheaded the visiting Jackson Ironmen to a 69-50 victory over the River Valley Raiders on Tuesday night in a non-league boys basketball tilt.

Both clubs, considered on the upswing this season, came into the contest at 1-0.

The Ironmen amounted a 43-28 halftime advantage, then extended the lead to 56-39 following three quarters.

The Red and White, in fact, went off for 25 first-period points — half of River Valley’s entire total.

A total of nine Ironmen reached the scoring column, as Jackson — despite being outsized by the taller Raiders — did well from inside the arc and at the free-throw line.

Cooper Donaldson poured in 20 points to pace the winners, connecting for eight field goals and a perfect 4-of-4 free throws.

Payton Speakman sank three field goals and 5-of-6 foul shots for 11 points, while Kendall Neal netted three field goals — including a three-pointer — towards 10.

Carson Spohn scored eight points on three field goals and 2-of-2 free throws, while Blake McCoy converted two field goals and 3-of-4 freebies into seven points.

Bryce Hall had a two and a three for five points, Josh Spires scored two field goals, Johnny Farley finished with a field goal, and Blake Wyatt wound up with two free throws.

Jarrett McCarley, on three threes and two twos, led the Raiders with 13 points.

Jacob Dovenbarger, on four field goals and 3-of-4 free throws, added 11 for the Silver and Black.

Tre Craycraft canned a pair of triples en route to 10 points, while Ian Polcyn finished with five and Jacob Campbell made 4-of-4 free throws.

Dustin Barber with three points, Rory Twyman’s trifecta, and Jordan Burns’ free throw rounded out the Raider scoring.

Jackson continues its non-league road show on Friday night at Meigs, while the Raiders return home — and open Tri-Valley Conference Ohio Division action — against Athens on Friday.
