UPLAND, Ind. — Isaiah Chapman scored a pair goals and assisted on another as the University of Rio Grande opened the 2015 season with a 6-0 trouncing of host Taylor University, Saturday night, in men’s soccer action at Turner Stadium.
The RedStorm, ranked No. 5 in the NAIA preseason Top 25 coaches’ poll, also got two goals each from junior Willian Paulino (Sao Paulo, Brazil) and redshirt freshman Spencer Reinford (McAlisterville, Pa.) in the victory, while juniors Patricio Arce (Santiago, Chile) and Jeremy de Hoog (Rotterdam, The Netherlands) and freshman Ben Mendoza (Chichester, England) had two assists each.
“I thought we played really, really well,” said Rio Grande head coach Scott Morrissey. “We executed on both sides of the ball.”
Rio Grande finished with a commanding 22-1 edge in shots, with the host Trojans not managing a shot until the 81st minute of the match.
Paulino got the scoring underway at 22:49 off of a corner kick by de Hoog, while Chapman – a transfer from Cincinnati State – found the net just under eight minutes later off a dual assist by Arce and sophomore Jorge Guinovart (Barcelona, Spain).
Reinford extended the lead to 3-0 at 37:15 with his first collegiate off assists by de Hoog and Chapman and that’s how things stayed until the 70:00 mark when Paulino found the net again off a feed from Arce.
Chapman scored again at 74:46 and Reinford set the final score with a buzzer-beating marker, as Mendoza assisted on both scores.
Freshman goalkeeper Benjamin Martinez (Maurin, France) stopped the only shot he faced in a shutout effort, while Nathan Henderson had six saves in the loss for Taylor, which had received votes in the preseason Top 25.
Rio Grande returns action on Friday night when it hosts Saint Xavier (Ill.) for a 7 p.m. kickoff.
