POINT PLEASANT, W. Va. — The Point Pleasant Lady Knights sent their trio of volleyball seniors out in a big way on Thursday night, easily — and emphatically — sweeping visiting Hannan 25-9, 25-10 and 25-6 in the two Mason County clubs’ regular-season finale.
With the win, the Lady Knights notched their 15th victory of the season in 25 regular-season matches, while the Wildcats conclude their regular season at 0-21.
Thursday night was all about Point Pleasant’s three seniors — Michaela Cottrill, Karlee Edmonds and Luiza Da Costa.
Cottrill and Edmonds have played for two years for second-year PPHS head coach Marla Cottrill, as Michaela Cottrill is the niece of the head coach.
Da Costa is a foreign exchange student from Brazil, having played both junior varsity and varsity bouts this season.
“Each girl brings something different and unique as individuals to the court,” said Coach Cottrill. “Michaela is an around good player and Luiza, you just can’t deny she is that front-row player and hitter. Then Karlee is more quiet, but is a leader in herself. She can play back row and has an awesome serve.”
Da Costa had five kills against Hannan, as Cottrill collected three kills along with three aces.
Otherwise, it was the Lady Knights’ talented group of underclassmen that made the major impact against the Wildcats.
The sophomore middle hitter Lanea Cochran chalked up eight kills, two aces and two blocks — as Gracie Cottrill, Olivia Dotson and Brenna Dotson each served up four aces.
Brenna Dotson delivered four kills, while Olivia Dotson and Cottrill chipped in with two apiece.
The Lady Knights never trailed in any of the three games, and the tilt’s only tie was at 1-1 in game two.
In the opening game, Point Pleasant scored the first five points and 13 of the first 14, then later scored five more consecutive to lead 22-7.
After Hannan hit for a couple of points, a service error, a Cochran kill and a Gracie Cottrill ace ended game one.
In the second set, the Lady Knights broke the 1-1 tie by scoring eight in a row, then back-to-back aces by Olivia Dotson made it 16-4.
With a 20-10 advantage, Point Pleasant posted the final five points, capped off by back-to-back aces by Michaela Cottrill.
In the third game, the Lady Knights again opened with the first five points, then kept building the advantage until they scored the final seven to clinch the match 25-6.
They also scored in stretches of four, five and three in a row in the third game — as all four of Brenna Dotson’s aces closed the contest out.
In fact, the only Wildcat points in the period came courtesy of two service errors, a hitting error, an attack error, a lift violation and a Hailey White kill.
The Lady Knights, seeded fourth in next week’s Class AA sectional tournament, travel to top-seeded Winfield on Tuesday night to play Nitro.
If Point Pleasant wins, it will then turn around and play second-seeded Wayne on Tuesday night.
