FLORENCE, Ky. — University of Rio Grande’s Kayla Briley and Marley Hanzel have been named the River States Conference Volleyball Setter and Attacker of the Week, respectively, for the week of for Oct. 3-9.
The awards were announced late Monday night by the conference office.
Briley had another strong all-around week, leading Rio Grande to a 4-0 week by tallying 9.63 assists, 1.94 digs and 1.31 kills per set in four matches.
She totaled 154 assists, 31 digs, 21 kills and 15.0 blocks while hitting .327.
The biggest performance for the 6-foot-0 senior from Marion included 52 assists, 12 kills, nine digs and 5.0 blocks in a five-set win over Mt. Vernon Nazarene.
She also had 37 assists, 11 digs and 5.0 blocks in a big win over Point Park (Pa.).
Briley now leads the RedStorm with 198 kills and 520 assists as a setter and attacker in a 6-2 system.
She is second on the team with 188 digs and 27.0 blocks.
Hanzel, a 6-foot-1 freshman outside hitter from Wheelersburg averaged over 10 kills per match and hit .294 for the week.
Hanzel picked up 13 kills in a big win over Mt. Vernon Nazarene and also notched double-digit kills with 11 versus Carlow and 10 in another big win over division leader Point Park (Pa.).
She started the week with eight kills versus WVU Tech.
Hanzel also added six digs and five blocks on the week.
For the year, she has 159 kills and 27.0 blocks in 23 matches.
Rio Grande is 13-10 overall and 3-3 in River States Conference action.
