POINT PLEASANT, W.Va. — Another first for the Black Knights.
The Point Pleasant boys soccer team picked up its first season sweep of the season Tuesday night following a 4-2 victory over visiting Belpre in a non-conference friendly at Ohio Valley Bank Track and Field in Mason County.
The Black Knights (7-9-1) celebrated Senior Night in style during the wire-to-wire victory as the hosts led 2-0 at the break and were up by as many as four goals before making wholesale changes late in regulation.
The Golden Eagles (8-6-0) mustered a pair of late goals against Point’s reserves, but the guests ultimately ran out of time in attempting a comeback bid.
The Black Knights, with the victory, were able to give a proper sendoff to the program’s lone senior — Brandon Bryant. More importantly, the Red and Black were able to string together their second two-game winning streak of the year.
Point Pleasant also claimed a season sweep after posting a 4-0 triumph at BHS back on September 6.
Following the game, PPHS coach Chip Wood spoke about his troops’ efforts — mentioning it was as productive an evening as he could have wished for.
“One of the best things about tonight is that we came out focused and really controlled the first half. We put together a couple of really nice goals early on and we had several really good offensive possessions, which is something that we have been working on,” Wood said. “It helped having that comfortable lead so that we could get a lot of people some quality minutes tonight and we were able to work on some things to get ready for the tournament.
“Overall, it was a good night for us and I’m glad we were able to send Brandon (Bryant) out with a win on Senior Night. There were a lot of pluses for us this evening.”
Point Pleasant and Belpre finished the game with 15 shots apiece, with each squad producing nine shots on goal and two corner kicks each.
In the first half, however, the Black Knights produced a 9-6 advantage in shots — including a small 4-3 edge in attempts on goal.
Point opened the scoring at the 25:41 mark after Austin Adams received a pass in stride from Alex Lenkov at the top middle of the box. Adams dribbled around the BHS keeper to the left side and booted the ball with his left foot to the top right corner of the net for an early 1-0 advantage.
Lenkov gave the hosts a 2-0 cushion at the 16:38 mark of the opening half after dribbling through a pair of defenders on the left corner of the box. Lenkov uncorked a 22-yarder with his left foot that found the top right corner of the net — giving PPHS a two-goal cushion at the break.
Justin Staats gave the Black Knights a three-goal advantage in the 51st minute as a crossing pass from Lenkov went through the legs of a Belpre defender and onto the left foot of Staats, who shifted his shot to the upper right corner of the net.
Chase Walker tacked on the final PPHS goal in the 61st minute after knocking in a rebound that bounced off of the Belpre goalie, making it a 4-0 contest.
Josh Davis netted a rebound off of Point starting keeper Cole Walker in the 71st minute for a 4-1 contest, then Evan Buttermore netted a 20-yarder from the top of the box in the 76th minute to wrap up the 4-2 outcome.
Cole Walker made all seven saves in goal for Point Pleasant. J.R. Pierce stopped four shots in net for BHS, while Leon Wolff also had a save for the guests.
Point Pleasant returns to action Saturday when it hosts Cross Lanes Christian at 1 p.m.
