GALLIPOLIS — United Way of Gallia County officially kicked off its 2016-17 fundraising season Friday morning by introducing its honorary campaign chairperson.
Sherry Daines, director of the Emergency Management Agency and Gallia County 911 coordinator, will serve as that person this year. She spoke at UWGC’s kickoff breakfast Friday at the Senior Resource Center on Ohio 161.
According to Judy Walters, director of UWGC, the group’s goal is to raise $50,000 by the first of next year. Last year, UWGC topped the $55,000 mark in pledges and donations from businesses and individuals.
“We don’t have to look far to see the needs in our community,” Daines said. “I’m happy to be able to help with that.”
According to its website, UWGC is a local, nonprofit organization that coordinates the investment of available financial and volunteer resources with the community’s health and human service needs. The group stresses that funds raised stay in Gallia County and used to help local citizens in need.
Equally important as raising funds is recruiting volunteers to help with his many endeavors.
Daines has been the 911 coordinator for the last six years, with directorship of EMA added to her list of responsibilities about three years ago. During that time, she said she has seen many community needs through those departments.
“It’s nice that I have these connections so that we can help people and get them some referrals, as we see that need, too,” she said.
Daines said UWGC should have no problem reaching its fundraising goal.
“They’ve proven time and time again that Gallia County takes care of each other, we care about other people’s needs,” she said. “I am happy to help out in any way that I can to connect our organizations. I know Gallia County will reach out there and we will meet this goal.”
Walters said Daines will be available to speak to any business or group interesting in knowing more about United Way and the assistance it offers.
