Bossard to host job; Social Security workshops

GALLIPOLIS — Bossard Memorial Library will be conducting a pair of presentations in February, one to help adults learn how to make the best of life decisions with Social Security and another to advise job-seekers in proper techniques.

The first presentation will be 6 p.m. Feb. 4 and will focus on advising individuals on how to get the most out of Social Security. Troy Miller, of Hilliard Lyons, will speak at the event.

Miller will speak about such things as couples maximizing their spousal benefit options, survivor, widow and divorcee benefits as well as collection strategies. According to Lynn Pauley, Bossard Memorial Library adult programming associate, Miller has given a number of presentations in his career.

The library will also have a job search practices advising session with the assistance of Laura Saunders, of Wing Haven Employment Services, at 6 p.m. Feb 11. Saunders will go over interview etiquette, resume best practices, what it takes to fill out an application, as well as how one should dress for an interview. One-on-one appointments at later dates will be offered for individuals who have questions. The services are offered free as part of a state grant initiative.

“One of the reasons we want to bring this in is because we feel people want the answers to these kinds of questions,” said Bossard Memorial Library Director Debbie Saunders. “How do I maximize Social Security? How do I go about getting some job skills to get ahead of the market? We feel that people are comfortable coming to the library because its a community gathering place to get this information. It might not seem as intimidating as other places may and they can get this information here in their own community.”

Pauley emphasized that speaking with experts can help those struggling with the problems in question and might help set them on the right path.

“We’re always looking for ways to partner with entities to bring expertise into the community and bring that to people,” Saunders said.

Hilliard Lyons is located on Second Avenue and primarily consults individuals in wealth and investment matters. Wing Haven is nonprofit organization based in Vinton and exists to provide counseling and personal development consulting to individuals in search of such services.

According to Saunders, the library always carries books and reference materials to assist members of the public to better educate themselves in financial matters, job search techniques as well as other concerns regarding economic matters.
