GALLIA COUNTY — Election day is Tuesday, Nov. 6, and here are the issues and candidate choices Gallia residents face.
In the race for Ohio Governor, residents must choose from gubernatorial candidate and his lieutenant governor candidate Richard Cordary and Betty Sutton of the democrats, Mike DeWine and Jon Husted of the republicans, Constance Gadell-Newton and Brett R. Joseph of the Green Party and Travis M. Irvine and J. Todd Grayson of the libertarians.
For Attorney General, residents can choose between Steve Dettelbach, democrat, or Dave Yost, republican.
For Auditor of State, residents may choose between Robert Coogan, libertarian, Keith Faber, republican, or Zack Space, democrat. For Secretary of State, Frank LaRose is running as a republican, Kathleen Clyde as a democrat and Dustin Nanna as a libertarian. For Treasurer of State, Rob Richardson is running as a democrat and Robert Sprague is running as a republican.
Jim Renacci runs as the republican candidate in the race for US Senator of Ohio and Sherrod Brown returns as the democrat incumbent.
Shawna Roberts runs as a democrat against incumbent Bill Johnson for Representative to Congress in the sixth district of Ohio.
For State Senator of the seventeenth district, Scott Dailey runs as a democrat against republican and incumbent Bob Peterson. For State Representative of the 93rd district, democrat Samantha Thomas-Bush runs against republican and incumbent Ryan Smith.
For Gallia Commissioner, democrat Randy Adkins runs against incumbent and republican Harold Montgomery.
Incumbent Larry Betz runs for Gallia Auditor with no challengers.
For Justice of Ohio’s Supreme Court are Craig Baldwin and Michael Donnelly. For another seat on the Ohio Supreme Court run Mary DeGenaro and Melody Stewart. For Judge of Ohio’s Fourth District Court of Appeals are incumbent Marie Hoover and Jason Smith. For another seat on the Fourth District Court of Appeals are Valarie Gerlach and Mike Hess.
Voters must also decide the fate of potential constitutional changes to be made to Ohio’s Constitution. Ballot language is as follows: “Issue 1, Proposed Constitutional Amendment Proposed by Initiative Petition To add a new Section 12 to Article XV of the Constitution of the State of Ohio, A majority yes vote is necessary for the amendment to pass.”
“If adopted, the amendment would: Require sentence reductions of incarcerated individuals, except individuals incarcerated for murder, rape, or child molestation, by up to 25% if the individual participates in rehabilitative, work, or educational programming. Mandate that criminal offenses of obtaining, possessing, or using any drug such as fentanyl, heroin, methamphetamine, cocaine, LSD, and other controlled substances cannot be classified as a felony, but only a misdemeanor. Prohibit jail time as a sentence for obtaining, possessing, or using such drugs until an individual’s third offense within 24 months. Allow an individual convicted of obtaining, possessing, or using any such drug prior to the effective date of the amendment to ask a court to reduce the conviction to a misdemeanor, regardless of whether the individual has completed the sentence. Require any available funding, based on projected savings, to be applied to state-administered rehabilitation programs and crime victim funds. Require a graduated series of responses, such as community service, drug treatment, or jail time, for minor, non-criminal probation violations.”
Residents of Gallipolis third precinct will be asked to affirm or deny a local liquor option at “Smokin’ Rob’s.”
“Shall the sale of wine and mixed beverages be permitted for sal on Sunday between the hours of eleven a.m. and midnight by S. P. Jobs, L.L.C, dba Smokin’ Rob’s, an applicant for a D-6 liquor permit and holder of a liquor agency store who is engaged in the business of operating a carry-out/liquor agency store at 1525 Eastern Avenue, Gallipolis, Ohio 45631 in this precinct?”
Residents of Green Township’s fifth precinct will also be asked to consider a variety of alcohol issues as well.
The first asks,”Shall the sale of beer, wine and mixed beverages be permitted by Par Mar Oil Co Inc. DBA Par Mar Store 44, an applicant for a D-1 and D-2 liquor permits, who is engaged in the business of operating a neighborhood convenience store at 2943 SR 141, Green Twp, Gallipolis Ohio 45631 in this precinct?”
The second asks,”Shall the sale of beer be permitted for sale on Sunday between the hours of eleven a.m., and midnight by Par Mar Oil Co Inc DBA Par Mar Store 44, an applicant for a D-1 liquor permit, who is engaged in the business of operating a neighborhood convenience store at 2943 SR 141, Green Twn, Gallipolis, Ohio 45631 in this precinct?”
A yes or no is required for the change to pass.
