GALLIPOLIS — Good News Baptist Church’s woodcutting and firewood giveaway ministry returns again this year for those struggling to beat the cold.

“The whole point is that we want to warm people’s homes,” said Good News Pastor Morgan McKinniss. “With members of our church, we work with other people in the community…Basically that’s all we do, cut and process firewood. Then, we take it and store it and we give it away. This year, we’re doing something a bit different. This year on the first Saturday of each month, starting in November, we’re going to have a giveaway from 10 a.m. to noon until it warms back up or until we run out of firewood. Anybody can come and bring a truck or a trailer. We’ll give them about a truckload or a cord of wood.”

The ministry has worked with student groups and other civic organizations in order to assist others. Other area churches are also invited to assist in the effort.

Families seeking assistance are asked to only take one load of wood as “there are many families in need and we want to get to everybody,” said the pastor.

McKinniss said the group also sells firewood for those who can afford to donate for others in need. The church does not profit from the money. The pastor says it goes right back into the ministry.

“If somebody has special circumstances and they need it delivered or whatever, they can call or email us or find us on Facebook,” said McKinniss. “That’s probably the fastest way to get us is through Facebook. We will do some special provisions if someone really needs it. We want to keep it to pickup only though on those Saturdays.”

An unnamed business is supplying the ministry with large trees. It’s already down and “limbed” said the pastor.

“Last year, we started this around Christmas,” said McKinniss. “It blew up and we were scrambling to keep up. This year we already have a healthy stock of firewood that’s seasoned and ready to go and we’re starting a lot earlier in the season and more structured… As a church, we want to fill a need. We aren’t looking to standout. We don’t care if anybody looks at us but we want to fill a vacant need and there are still a lot of people who heat with firewood in our area and struggle in the winter. They’re calling for a really cold winter. So, that being the case, we want to fill the need and help people. If we can help warm homes with firewood, we should do that.”

In addition, it’s an activity members of the church enjoy, said the pastor.

“There are a lot of guys who enjoy running a saw and love going out and working,” said McKinniss.

Individuals seeking assistance with wood need not bring a bill or paperwork, the church just requires that church members assist in loading the wood.

“Our goal is having the conversation with people and building connections and relationships and to let people know we care about the community and to spread God’s love,” said McKinniss.
