Fire allegedly set by inmates

At 9:42 p.m. Sunday, Gallia County 911 received reports of smoke in the jail at the county courthouse. Gallipolis Fire Department responded to the scene within minutes, working to clear the scene. By 9:59 p.m., the emergency was cancelled and the fire contained, according to Gallia County 911.

“A group of inmates had concocted a plan and started a fire on one of their mattresses,” stated Sheriff Matt Champlin. “It is still under investigation, we are still reviewing video.”

Champlin explained the correctional staff recognized the problem swiftly and secured inmates in a different area for their safety. Gallipolis Fire Department doused the blaze and ventilated the area. Corrections officers cleaned the debris making the block safe for habitation and inmates returned to their cells, according to Champlin.
