GALLIPOLIS — Gallia Academy High School athletics is set to host the inaugural “Finish on the 50” five kilometer dash fundraiser.
Happening on Aug. 19 at 6:30 p.m., the race will start on the Memorial Field Track, travel out the O.O. McIntyre Hike and Bike Trail, then return along the same route to finish on the 50 yard line on the track.
The event is an effort to raise funds to cover the cost of sports fees, which each student athlete must pay to participate in a school sport.
“All the proceeds will go to sports fees. It goes towards athletes, it doesn’t go towards equipment or to pay for anything. It’s strictly for kids sports fees,” said Adam Clark, athletic director at GAHS.
Each competitor can pre-register for $25, or register at the race for $30. To pre-register go to http://www.tristateracer.com/event.php?RaceID=9518. Registration the day of the race will start at 5 p.m. at Memorial Field.
Multiple age groups are set up for competition: 9 and under, 10-19, 20-29, 30-39, 40-49, and 50 and older. The event will also have giveaways, a live DJ, and other items to help raise funds for student-athletes.
“We’re trying to help take some of the burden off the parents and the players,” said Clark.
Several have already registered, and others have agreed to sponsor the event including Gallipolis City Schools Board of Education, Feed Stop, Crisenbery Electric, Holzer Health System, Stephen and Janice Henry, Bryan and Brittani Roe, Foster Sales & Delivery, and Pleasant Valley Hospital.
The current cost of sports fees is $90 per student, per sport. Although, some teams do fundraising to help cover this cost for their athletes.
