GALLIPOLIS — Gallipolis City School District is set to host its upcoming open houses in all five schools.
On Wednesday, Aug. 16 at 6 p.m., Gallia Academy Middle School will host incoming 6th grade students for orientation. The following day, 7th and 8th grade students can stop by GAMS at 6 p.m. for schedules and orientation. Rio Grande and Washington Elementary schools will also be holding open houses at their respective locations. Gallia Academy High School and Green Elementary will host their open house events on Aug. 17 at 5:30 p.m. as well.
“When a kid comes here it’s a new building, there’s a lot of little tiny things that we want to put them at ease,” said Josh Donley, principal at GAHS. “We want them on the first day to feel comfortable.”
He said the benefits of having new students prepared and aware of the layout of the school and location of their classes reduces confusion and stress for students on the first day.
The open house at GAHS will consist of students receiving their schedules for the year, a welcoming by Donley and explanation of details parents and students should know with the chance to explore the school and talk with teachers.
“It allows the parents to ask questions (of the teachers) and they can feel comfortable about where they’re sending their child” said Donley. “It helps out everybody at ease, it makes the first day so much easier, and allow us to address certain issues head on.”
During the event families are encouraged to come into the school and walk around, talk to teachers, ask questions, and find out what is needed for the upcoming school year.
Donley said he and his staff are excited. After recharging over the summer, they are looking forward to the new school year.
