BIDWELL —Retired Gallipolis City School social studies teacher and Vietnam veteran Rick Howell recently presented an informational session to River Valley’s AP Government and History class taught by Brea McClung.
Students listened intently as Howell shared his own real life story while serving in Vietnam and stories about the friends with whom he served.
Howell detailed information about the jungles of Vietnam as well as the outline of the training given to him by the United States armed forces. The retired instructor shared perspectives about his encounters with the Vietcong and then described the sometimes “hostile at worst” and “indifferent at best” encounters Howell experienced as a young man with people when he returned to the states.
Howell reminisced that he came from a typical all-American home and was drafted into the service as were many of his generation. After completing his tour of duty, he came home, earned his degree, and went to the classroom. At the end of the presentation, Howell challenged all students to work hard and use their abilities to become the best citizens that they can be.
