MERCERVILLE — Maddie Simpson has been awarded the Franklin B. Walter All Scholastic Award for Gallia County, a special honor.
One award is assigned to each county across Ohio. Simpson, along with many others from South Gallia High School applied, but Simpson was chosen from all of them for her academic merit, student leadership, community service, and other qualities deemed appropriate for high school students.
Simpson is a senior at South Gallia High School and has plans for education after high school.
“I plan to attend Marshall University in the fall to earn a degree in secondary education with an emphasis on math,” she explained.
With education being such an important part of her life so far, she plans to become a teacher herself and continue to invest in students.
“When I first applied, I just did it because I thought it would be neat, but when I won, it was so much more than that,” said Simpson.
The Walter award is not a scholarship, and provides no financial aid for recipients. Simpson, along with Principal Bray Shamblin and other administrators from Gallia County Local Schools attended a banquet in Columbus in honor of the winners.
“The winner from each county stood up and was honored individually, and was able to say what their plans are for college,” stated Simpson. “It was amazing to hear what everyone is going to do.”
She also has some advice for her younger classmates: “It’s okay to not be the very best at everything, you don’t have to stress out over it all. Just do the best you can.”
