GALLIPOLIS — Preparations are underway for this year’s Relay for Life Event.
On June 2, Gallipolis City Park will once again host the Relay for Life, an international event that strives to end cancer through community-based fundraising and awareness. As in previous years, teams will work together in the weeks leading up to the event in order to raise funds for cancer research. According to the event coordinator Karrie Davison, anyone can sign up to help at any time.
“The event is about the local community coming together to fight cancer. This year will mark the 23rd time it has taken place in Gallia County,” Davison said. “Each relay is specific to their community. Gallia’s is literally the residents of Gallia County taking a stand against cancer.”
This is why the American Cancer Association asks for local citizens to sign up early and work towards the goal of ending cancer.
Each team is structured differently. The number of participants on each team varies, and a captain is necessary. The goal of each team is to raise funds and increase awareness for cancer research, ultimately working towards the goal of ending cancer.
The Relay for Life organization is the single largest organization in the world dedicated to fundraising cancer research, explained Davison. The relay itself is intended to honor those who have won the fight against cancer, celebrate the lives of those who have lost, and encourage those still fighting against the deadly disease.
Teams and individuals can learn more and sign up for the Relay For Life event by visiting RelayForLife.org/gallia or call the event planners at 888-227-6446 ext.3207.
