GALLIPOLIS — The Gallia County Retired Teachers met at noon on Feb. 9 at The Golden Corral in Gallipolis.

President Ollie Tipple opened the meeting. Jack James led the Pledge of Allegiance. Pat Dillon gave the blessing prior to the members partaking in the lunch buffet.

Guest speaker Cinda Saunders, Holzer Hospice social worker and volunteer coordinator along with social work trainee Margaret Bossaller gave an informative talk on documenting future health care decisions in order to take control of the many choices regarding a personal medical future. They distributed an advance directive packet entitled “Choices Living Well at the End of Life” which explained Ohio’s health care power of attorney, guardianship, living will, donor registry, and do-not-resuscitate laws in order to help the reader to make informed decisions about their health care into the future.

Judy Barcus, volunteer coordinator of God’s Hands at Work, located on Keystone Road in Vinton, also spoke to the group about the community outreach that the organization provides. She asked the membership to consider volunteering as they are in need of volunteer help. Monetary and other donations are also appreciated.

Rick and Jeri Howell, Jack and Beth James, Jane Ann Slagle, and Pat Dillon were all recognized for celebrating January and February birthdays. Get well wishes go out to Mary Lanier and Sally Moshier. Donations were taken for both the Backpack Snack Pack Program and the scholarship fund. Also, a raffle was held at the conclusion of the meeting to help defer the cost of mailing the newsletter.

Jack James gave the treasurer’s report and Jane Ann Slagle reported that the minutes from the December meeting were available in the last issue of The Slate. Both reports were approved.

Marlene Hoffman conducted a necrology service in memory of Verna Daniels, Neil Sanders, and Nancy Vaughn.

Karen Cornell reported that the Gallia County Retired Teachers volunteered for a total of 10,199 hours in 2016. Marlene Hoffman was recognized for having the most volunteer hours with a total of 1,850.
