PATRIOT — The Beta Alpha Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma (DKG) recently awarded a scholarship to teacher candidate Ellie Bostic of Patriot.

Bostic graduated from South Gallia High School and attends Morehead State University majoring in middle school education.

Other business during the fall meeting included a tour of Wing Haven Counseling Center. A question and answer session followed the tour and was conducted by Director of Counseling Amy Sisson. The meal was provided by DKG member Donna DeWitt at Raccoon Creekside Cottage along with a tour of the facility. Donna entertained the group with the reading of a “Vintonite” poem written by an unknown author in 1894. A more current version entitled “Vinton Today compared to Yesterday – Then and Now” written by Mary Lanier in 2011 was also shared to the delight of the crowd. Copies of “Vinton Village News – Vinton Village Commemorative Bean Dinner & Bicentennial Celebration Issue” of August 2003 detailing the history of Vinton from the 1800’s to present day was shared with the group.

At the October meeting held at the French Art Colony Pavilion, Jenny Myers, a retired teacher and an actor with the Riverby Theatre Guild, described the history of The French Art Colony and the many programs that are offered, such as, March and April art exhibits of area school children and a juried competition open to the public held in July. A fundraiser auction followed the program.

In November, the DKG met at Holzer Health and Wellness Center in Gallipolis. Members toured the facility and enjoyed healthy snacks for the evening meal. The DKG organization celebrated its 77th birthday in November. This was observed with a “Happy 77th Birthday” cake being served for dessert. Josie Bapst will be re-instating the Facebook page and members are encouraged to check the page periodically for pictures, news, and updates. As the meeting was held on Veterans Day, DKG members shared about family members that were veterans. A basket of thank you notes were passed around for DKG members to take one and send to a veteran.

The next meeting will be on February 10th at the Gallia-Vinton ESC in Wood Hall at the University of Rio Grande. Dr. Michelle Johnston, President of URG, will be the guest speaker.
