GALLIPOLIS — The Gallia County Sheriff’s Office received a recent report of a “scam caller”. The female “scam caller” told the victim that she was a family member (granddaughter) of the victim. She claimed to be in Mexico and said she had been in a car accident. She mentioned something about drugs being found on someone, and told the victim she needed $1,500.

The Sheriff’s Office said none of this was true. The scam caller wanted the victim to go to a store and perform an electronic transfer of money. A male also got on the phone and spoke to the victim.

The Sheriff’s Office said this is a known scam often used against the elderly, and officers want area residents to beware of similar circumstances. Officials warn residents to not send money or give personal or financial information out over the phone.
