GALLIPOLIS — A Gallipolis man charged with striking a pedestrian with his vehicle last fall, was recently charged in the Gallia County Common Pleas Court with aggravated vehicular assault.

Shawn M. Delahoussaye, 28, pleaded not guilty on Monday to causing serious physical harm to a Gallipolis woman on October 7, 2012, while operating a 1986 Ford truck.

Delahoussaye was charged after officers with the Gallipolis Police Department were dispatched to Eastern Avenue in reference to an injury crash at approximately 2:36 a.m. on October 7.

Upon arrival at 1445 Eastern Avenue, officers observed a blue pickup truck on the roadway — a vehicle being driven by the defendant — and a car in a nearby driveway, as well as a woman sitting in the roadway who was bleeding from injuries sustained to her head.

According to the report, officers observed blood in the roadway beside the 21-year-old female whose face was also covered in blood. The victim was transported to Holzer Medical Center by Gallia County EMS.

Witnesses to the crash told police that as the victim was attempting to get into the passenger side of the vehicle parked in the driveway at 1445 Eastern Avenue, the truck, that was traveling north on Eastern Avenue, veered off the roadway and struck both the victim and the vehicle she was attempting to enter.

The suspect, who denied consuming any alcohol or drugs prior to the crash, later submitted to a field sobriety test and was subsequently arrested for operating a vehicle under the influence (OVI).

He was transported to the Gallipolis Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol and was later released to await a ride.

The defendant was later cited for OVI, a first degree misdemeanor, and for failure to control, a minor misdemeanor, and charged in the Gallipolis Municipal Court where a court pre-trial has been set for February 11.

An indictment alleging aggravated vehicular assault, a third degree felony, was filed on December 13 with the Gallia County Clerk of Courts and a warrant was issued for Delahoussaye’s arrest.

During his arraignment hearing on January 7 in the common pleas court, the defendant was present with his retained counsel Sterling E. Gill, II. His bond was set at $15,000, own recognizance with an additional bond of $1,500, 10 percent secured.

A plea agreement in this case may be filed by April 22, and a jury trial has been scheduled for May 21.

Following the hearing, bond was posted for Delahoussaye’s release.
