GLOUSTER, Ohio — Turnovers decide games.
Trimble forced Southern into 21 turnovers Friday night, leading to a 66-50 Tri-Valley Conference Hocking Division victory for the host Tomcats.
Southern (4-5, 3-4 TVC Hocking) managed just five points in the opening stanza, while Trimble (5-5, 3-3) scored 16. The Tornadoes rallied back, out scoring THS 16-to-12 in the period. The Tomcats led 28-21 at the halfway point.
Trimble extended its lead to 12 points after out scoring Southern 19-to-14 in the third period. A 19-to-15 spurt for the Tomcats sealed the 66-50 victory, their second straight.
The Tornadoes were led by Tristen Wolfe with 24 points on the night, 17 of which came after halftime. Hunter Johnson had eight points, Taylor McNickle added five, while Zac Beegle and Chandler Drummer each had four. Trenton Deem and Adam Pape each marked two points and Dennis Teaford rounded out the SHS scoring with one point.
Wolfe’s seven rebounds led Southern, followed by McNickle and Drummer each had six. Deem led the Tornadoes with two assists, while Pape had a game-high three steals. SHS shot 21-of-57 (36.8 percent) from the field, including 3-of-14 (21.4 percent) from beyond the arc. Johnson was responsible for two of the Tornadoes three-pointers, while McNickle hit the other. SHS was 5-of-12 (41.7 percent) from the free throw line.
Trimble finished with a trio of players in double-figures scoring, Jake Kish with 20, Konner Standley with 12 and Jacob Koons with 11. Kish led the Tomcats with seven rebounds, while Standley finished with a game-high nine assists. Trimble shot 27-of-56 (48.2 percent) from the field, 4-of-9 (44.4 percent) from three and 7-of-17 (41.2 percent) from the charity stripe. Koons and Standley each hit a pair of three pointers for THS.
Southern held a 40-to-27 advantage on the glass, but turned the ball over 10 more times than the Red and White.The Tornadoes are now 2-3 away from Racine this season.
The Purple and Gold will have their chance at revenge on February 1st when Trimble travels to Charles W. Hayman Gymnasium.
