GALLIPOLIS — A grand jury recently returned a second-degree felonious assault charge against a Gallia County woman accused of cutting a man with two butcher knives last month.

Sabra L. Clark, 23, Vinton, was present on Friday before Gallia County Common Pleas Judge D. Dean Evans and was charged with felonious assault for her alleged actions on the evening of November 19, 2012.

Clark was taken into custody by Gallia County Sheriff’s Deputies at approximately 6:30 p.m. on Monday, November 19 after they were dispatched to her residence at 1196 Tick Ridge Road in reference to a possible stabbing.

According to the police report, upon their arrival on scene, deputies observed a female subject holding her left arm behind her back exit the mobile home belonging to Clark.

The subject, later identified as Clark, reportedly walked toward the officers and initially refused to show the deputies her hands.

After several commands were given, the suspect stopped at the front of the deputies’ cruisers and complied with their orders.

She reportedly had dried, smeared blood on the left side of her neck, on her left arm and on both of her calves.

The suspect told the deputies that William Hatten, 33, Bidwell, who was later identified as the victim, had grabbed her by the throat and had cut himself on a table. She later told the officers that he had cut himself after he had exited the residence.

Further, the report indicates that Clark had no signs or marks of assault on her throat.

The suspect, who was taken into investigative custody at that time, later gave the deputies permission to search the residence, and, after entering the mobile home, the officers found blood droplets on the kitchen floor, on the carpet in the living room and on a couch and glass table.

A blood-stained towel soaked with bleach was also discovered in the bedroom of the residence along with two butcher knives with dried blood on their blades in the kitchen sink.

Hatten, who had reportedly escaped to a neighbor’s house to call for help, was taken to the Holzer Medical Center emergency room by Gallia County EMS for treatment for severe lacerations.

The victim told deputies that he and Clark had been drinking that evening, and, according to his statement, while he was lying on the couch, the suspect charged at him with a knife in each hand and started cutting him and attempted to stab him.

He later escaped the home and ran to a neighbor’s house to seek help.

Clark was arrested and made an initial appearance before Gallipolis Municipal Court Judge Margaret Evans on November 21.

Her bond was set at $100,000, 10 percent, and, according to the court’s online docket, bond in the amount of $10,000 was posted for her release on November 26.

The municipal court charges were later dismissed as a case against Clark was taken to grand jury.

An indictment against Clark was filed with the Gallia County Clerk of Courts on December 13 along with a summons to appear for arraignment on December 21 signed by Gallia County Prosecutor Jeff Adkins.

During Friday’s hearing, the defendant “entered a plea of not guilty and not guilty by reason of insanity,” according to the journal entry.

Clark was found indigent and defense attorney Charles Knight was appointed to represent her.

Her bond was continued at $100,000, 10 percent as transferred from Gallipolis Municipal Court and a $1,500, 10 percent additional bond was also set.

She was further ordered to have no violations of the law, no law enforcement contact and no contact with the person or property of William Hatten.

A jury trial in this case has been scheduled for May 6, 2013, and a plea agreement may be filed on April 5, 2013.

Clark was released on bond as continued from the municipal court.
