GALLIPOLIS — A Pickaway County man currently serving a prison term for impersonating a peace officer and committing theft in Hocking County, was sentenced on Monday in the Common Pleas Court of Gallia County for a 2011 theft by deception in Gallia County.

Christopher P. Hill, 41, Circleville, formerly of Gallipolis, was sentenced to six months of incarceration in a state prison on December 3 after he pleaded guilty to stealing $650 from the 92-year-old victim on August 28, 2011, a theft that was committed by deception, according to the indictment.

Hill was arraigned in January 2012 and was later released on his own recognizance.

The defendant later signed a plea agreement in this case and was scheduled to appear on March 27 for a plea hearing in the common pleas court. Hill, however, failed to appear for the hearing and a warrant was issued for his arrest.

Hill was arrested on April 7 and appeared before common pleas Judge D. Dean Evans for a plea hearing on April 10.

During the hearing, Hill pleaded guilty to the theft charge and his bond, which had been revoked following his arrest, was reduced on a motion of the defense. The defendant was later released on his own recognizance.

A sentencing hearing was later continued to May 24 and the Hill again failed to appear for this hearing. A warrant was issued.

The sentencing hearing was rescheduled by the court for December 3 after it was discovered that Hill had been incarcerated since October in the Correctional Reception Center in Orient, Ohio, for charges stemming from Hocking County.

According to the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction website, Hill is currently serving a one-year sentence for impersonating a peace officer and theft in Hocking County. He was admitted to the Correctional Reception Center in Orient on October 19.

A letter signed by the defendant and filed on November 15 states that at the time of his court date in May he was in jail in Circleville and never received notification of his court date.

The letter further requests that the court honor Hill’s previously signed plea agreement and that he be sentenced as soon as possible.

Hill was subsequently transported to the Gallia County Jail, and, during Monday’s hearing, Hill was sentenced to six months of incarceration for theft — a sentence that will be served concurrently will the sentence in his Hocking County case.

The defendant was further ordered to pay restitution in the amount of $650 to the elderly victim in this case.
