TORNADO, W.Va. — The third time was indeed the charm.

Point Pleasant senior Andrea Porter earned her third straight berth to the state cross country meet and also set a personal record in the process Thursday night in the Class AAA Region IV championships held at Meadowood Park in Kanawha County.

Porter — the first-ever two-time state qualifier from PPHS in cross country — punched her third consecutive ticket to the state championships, which will be held Saturday, Oct. 27, at Cabell Midland High School.

Porter finished seventh overall out of 45 competitors with a time of 20:08.60. Tori Dent of Hurricane won the individual title with a mark of 18:47.90, while Brittney McMillion of Winfield was the runner-up with a time of 19:11.30.

Hurricane won the girls team title with 29 points, followed by Cabell Midland with 48 points for second place. The Lady Knights did not have enough racers for a team tally.

Judith Vives-Sanches was 41st overall with a time of 29:26.67, while Avery Daughtery placed 44th with a mark of 31:42.46.

Cabell Midland won the team title on the boys side with 17 points, followed by runner-up Hurricane with 78 points. The Point boys were sixth out of six teams with 166 points. Jacob Burcham of Cabell Midland won the individual title with a time of 15:18.20, while teammate Avery Campbell was the runner-up with a mark of 16:15.90.

Caleb Riffle led PPHS by placing 25th with a time of 18:32.40, which set a new record for boys at the school. Joseph Little page was next in 33rd place with a time of 19:20.40.

Zach Canterbury (19:55.80) and Christian Pyles (19:56.90) respectively placed 37th and 39th, while Nick Hatfield rounded out the team scoring with a 43rd place effort of 21:23.70. Darrell McBeath was 48th out of 49 runners with a time of 25:54.80.
